PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Tens of thousands of people are expected to turn out along the Schuylkill River this weekend for the 48th annual Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

More than 2,000 boats will be on the river with competitors from over 13 countries.

Jennifer Wesson, executive director, says this event has come a long way over the last nearly five decades.

"The race began as a way to provide graduates an opportunity to continue to compete and that blossomed from 150 competitors to now 9,000 competitors," she said.

Wesson says every level of competition will be on display this weekend.

"Competitors range from high school, all the way through masters. Our youngest competitor could be 14 years of age and our oldest is typically in their early nineties, from novice rowers to Olympic athletes," she said.

Regatta events kick off Thursday.
