Yanny or Laurel

NEW YORK (KYW Newsradio) —  What do you hear?

The latest internet debate that’s sweeping social media, and wasting plenty of time, has people answering that question.

Remember the debate on the internet three years ago over the color of a dress? Well, the 2018 version is here. A short audio clip has sparked a new discussion. Is the word you hear "Yanny" or "Laurel?"

The debate began on Reddit and spread throughout social media.

KYW Newsradio went to 30th Street Station for a very unscientific poll. The consensus...

“That’s absolutely Laurel," said John from Connecticut. "There’s no doubt in my mind I’m hearing Laurel.”

“That clip is definitely saying Laurel," said Martha. "I don’t understand how anyone can hear Yanny.”

But there are people on “Team Yanny.”

“People have said I didn’t understand how this was even a controversy," Martha explained, "and I played it for one person and they instantly heard Yanny.”

Whatever it is, one thing is for sure...

“It’s amazing that we can be so similar and have such a different take," said John.

“It’s interesting that you hear clearly the same thing, and different people interpret it in completely different ways,” Marth said.

Some people speculated the age of the listener might determine what people heard, while others changed the pitch to alter results.

So whether it's "Laurel" or "Yanny," a white and gold dress or blue and black one, the right answer depends on who you ask.
