Assumption School, in Atco, NJ, Will Shut Down After Current School Year

By David Madden ATCO, N.J. (CBS) — A Catholic elementary school in Atco, NJ will be shutting down come June, despite the best efforts of parents and the community to save it.

Supporters of Our Lady of the Assumption School had thought they had met the demand of the Diocese of Camden to have 150 students signed up for next fall.

But Peter Feuerherd, a diocesan spokesman, says they weren’t even close.  The reason? Tuition.

“The problem was that more than 20 of the students in that grouping had not paid for this year’s tuition, so they really could not be counted on for next year,” he explained.

A number of fundraisers for the school have been held, but future events are now on hold.

As for the affected parents, they will be offered $1,000 vouchers to be used at any other Catholic school in the diocese.  The closest is Our Lady of Mount Carmel Regional School, in Berlin.
