PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) CBS 3 held its 12th annual Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation fundraiser to fight pediatric cancer.

The phones began ringing at 6 a.m. Thursday, kicking off a 14-hour telethon that included an army of volunteers.

"It's really giving back, seeing all the children and families and how much hope it brings to the community."

The event featured urgent appeals for donations from on-air personalities such as CBS 3 anchor Jim Donovan.

"The folks have been overwhelmingly generous," he said. "As of noon we had collected over $4 million. We just want to make sure that families do not have to go through what Alex's family went through 12 years ago."

Alexandra Scott's mother, Liz, said the telethon is a labor of love and a way to continue her daughter's legacy.

"You have this constant loss that never goes away. You just learn to deal with it," she said. "But at the same time we're so lucky because we see how her life has made so many incredible things happen for other kids and has inspired so many people. And that is just something that I am beyond grateful for."
