DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — One of the area's best track and field athletes will look to cap his college career in style this weekend.

Delaware Valley University senior Ta'riq Thomas is heading to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships later this week in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he will try to win a national title in the triple jump and the long jump.

"It's very exciting," Thomas said. "I'm humbled that I have the opportunity to compete late in the season and keep pushing forward, and I'm working hard at it."

Thomas, who hails from Woodstown, New Jersey, has put together an incredible resume during his time in Doylestown with the Aggies.

He is a five-time All American (four triple jump, one long jump) who this year was named to the All-Mideast Region team for both the triple jump and long jump by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

He won the Middle Atlantic Conference championship in both the triple jump and long jump this season while being named the MAC Field Athlete of the Year. His long jump this season — 7.86 meters — is the third-best long jump in Division III history.

Thomas talked about what he loves about track and field.

"Just the competitive nature," he said. "There's a lot of great athletes out here that are really great at what they do, and I'm just happy to be a part of it."

Thomas said he started track and field as a freshman at Woodstown High School, but he was mainly a football guy growing up.

"The football coach here [DelVal head coach Duke Greco], he recruited me for football," Thomas recalled. "Oddly enough, I never got any letters or any recruitment for track. So that's how I started — I came here for football and I knew I was going to run track here, I was going to do two sports. Then during my spring season of track, my freshman year, I had to make a big decision just to give up football and focus more on track."

Safe to say the decision worked out.

Thomas will be joined at the NCAA Championships this weekend by teammate John Jones. The senior will also take part in the long jump.

The long jump takes place Thursday afternoon in La Crosse. The triple jump will be Saturday afternoon.
