PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Donald Hunt has been with the Philadelphia Tribune for decades and is one of the top sports writers in the city.

He grew up in Darby Borough and went to college at Lincoln University.

"When I got out of school, my first job was at The News of Delaware County. I just covered high school sports there, but it was really good because I started out covering a regular high school football game, then I moved to a preview column each week. Then I went from that, to doing a feature story, I mean everything went in steps. So I learned a lot, so when eventually I made the jump to the Tribune, I came there with some experience," he said.

He first joined the Tribune in 1983.

Hunt has covered some of the top pro sports stories Philadelphia has had to offer over the years, but he also does a lot of work covering the local high school and college scenes.

"One of the biggest things for me in terms of the local story, and this gets me every time, is if I'm standing in line at Rite Aid, buying something, or I'm at ShopRite or Acme or somewhere, and a mother will come up and say, 'Mr. Hunt, you covered my son in the public league championship.' I mean, there's something about that, you know. And sometimes I'll remember who the person is and I'll say, 'well who is your son? Oh yeah, I remember, yeah, he made the big steal,' or 'he got the rebound,' or whatever the case may be, or 'threw the pass.' So that's kind of special," he said.

In 2011, Hunt was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists Sports Task Force. In 2017 he was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
