PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Tina Sloan Green is a true Philadelphia sports legend. As an athlete, she was the first African-American to play for the U.S. women's lacrosse national team. She also played for the U.S. field hockey team. She coached women's lacrosse and field hockey at Temple University. She was actually the first African-American women's lacrosse coach in the country and led the Owls to three national championships in the 80's.

Sloan Green's third national title at Temple came in 1988 as her team dominated from start to finish, going 19-0 and beating Penn State for the crown. She says the team was hungry after losing in the national championship game the year before, the squad's only loss that season.

"There was something I guess contagious about that group," Sloan Green says. "Off the field and on the field, they were determined that they were going to leave on top this year. Our staff, our parents, (Temple) President (Peter) Liacouras, (then Temple basketball coach) John Chaney, the whole school was involved. The finals were at Swarthmore, so we were almost home. It was tremendous, it was tremendous. Something I'll always remember and I think everybody on that team will remember."

Sloan Green's first college coaching job came in 1973 at Lincoln. She coached basketball and cheerleading and she says working at the historically black university really had an impact on her.

"Because all my days at Girls High, my days (in college) at West Chester, I had never seen a black coach or a black teacher at Girls High. So this was an experience to see all these black folks in very significant roles."

In addition to all her success as an athlete and then a coach, Sloan Green is also the co-founder of the Black Women in Sport Foundation.

"The mission of the Black Women in Sport Foundation is to increase opportunities for black girls, girls of color from the playing field to the board room."
