PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- It is a sad reality that racism occurs in our society, and although the hope is that we are making progress in dealing with this issue, it is still a problem.

Over the past five years, there has been an effort to address racism head on in medical education.

The thought is that young physicians need to know that this is an important barrier to care and the more they understand it the better care they can provide.

A group of family practice programs has developed an interactive training module that deals with the issue.

Early returns suggest that the workshop is working. Perhaps, most importantly, it is giving physicians confidence to address racism head on when they see it in their interactions with patients and even in the workplace.

This is clearly a positive step.
