PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- We are living in an electronic age and there is no doubt that social media is becoming more and more important. So it is no surprise that the use of social media technology is beginning to be used in providing health care.

According to new information from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, so-called digital coaching has been shown to be very effective in helping patients manage their type 2 diabetes. Of particular importance is the fact that this type of coaching is encouraging patients to receive important care, such as annual eye exams, annual foot exams and getting their hemoglobin A1C measured.

The study found that within three months of a digital program, the average diabetic had a reduction in their hemoglobin A1C, as well as their weight, and this was maintained for an entire year if the coaching continued.
