PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This week on Flashpoint: Host and KYW Community Affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions about age discrimination. AARP released a report in 2018 showing that nearly two out of three workers over age 45 have experienced age bias while at work. ProPublica did an investigative report showing that the problem is pervasive in some industries.

This week, we walk through the flames of ageism.

The average age of baby boomers, one of America's most populous generations, is in the mid-60s, which is prime time for age discrimination.  Federal, state and local laws protect workers and applicants from this form of bias. But how do you identify ageism, and what can you do to protect your legal rights? Attorney and ageism expert Laura Carlin Mattiacci of Console and Mattiaci Law, LLC joins Peggy Truit, Director of JEVS Services Career Strategies program and Gloria Moss, a woman over age 55 who experiences age discrimination on this week's panel.

Our newsmaker of the week is former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who discusses his work with Safehouse, a nonprofit gearing up to build and open the nation's first safe injection site. Controversy and backlash erupted when word got out that Safehouse had found a location for the site in Kensington. Neighbors spoke out at meetings this week, rejecting the idea.

Rendell, who is on the board of the nonprofit, discusses how safe injections sites work, why he's willing to fight for them and what he's willing to do to even if the U.S. attorney gets a court order blocking them.

Community Liasion Ginger Smith helped to create the program, which is designed to help with some of the cost burdens of prom. CCS will host a prom gear give away on April 27.  Details on how to donate or where to get free gear is here.
