PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) —  This week on Flashpoint: Host and KYW Community Affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions around the rising rate of suicide among youth.  A recent story about an 11-year-old Philadelphia boy, who was bullied because of his weight, made headlines after he hung himself to the surprise and heartbreak of his family. However, he is not alone. The numbers have been staggering in recent years, with suicide being the number three cause of death among young people age 10 to 24. But, why? Sarah-Ashley Andrews, founder of Dare 2 Hope joins Dr. Dan Romer, a University of Pennsylvania professor who focuses on the connection between mental health and media and Science Leadership Academy freshmen Sasha Mannino and Iris Peron-Ames who tragically lost their friend to suicide in 2017 but say they are working to keep her legacy alive.

The newsmaker of the week is Luis Berrios, who was shot in the back during a robbery outside of his North Philadelphia home last November. While dealing with four excruciating surgeries and long stints in the hospital, Berrios traded his desire for retaliation and revenge for redemption. He recently set out on a crusade for forgiveness. He discusses his journey, his method to amplify the message and his goals for the heat wrenching crusade. To support Berrios in his recovery, go to: www.GoFundMe.com/HeroNeedsAHero.

The organization also runs Pet Parenthood, a low cost spay and neuter clinic that serves the Philadelphia region. Founder, Annie Trinkle, explains why she started the organization.
