Flexibility and balance: Important parts of your exercise routine

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- I always tell my patients that it's important to get some exercise, but I must admit, I'm not always clear about what type of exercise I suggest. 

For a well-rounded fitness routine there are four types of exercise: endurance exercise, strength building, flexibility, and balance. 

Flexibility and balance are often ignored by many. 

Flexibility is any activity that helps improve the ability of your joints to move through their full range of motion. 

Balance is activity that helps improve your ability to keep your balance while moving and while holding still. 

Most of us know classic exercises. For instance, stretching exercises like toe touches and calf stretches or balance exercises like standing on one foot. But you can improve flexibility and balance by certain activities such as yoga and pilates. 

Exercise can be fun, and for many people the more you vary it, the better.
