Healthy routines for children as they get ready to return to school

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- We are getting close to the end of the summer and, for many, the beginning of the school year. This can be at time of tremendous adjustment, not only for students but for their families, as well. 

A major issue can be related to sleep and sleep loss. 

It is very important that young adults get into a schedule which allows them to get the proper amount of sleep. That is why as we head into September it's important to try to get the kids to go to bed earlier each night before the start of school. It's far better to have a gradual reduction in sleep than a dramatic reduction the night before school. 

Another key point: if the kids don't eat a healthy breakfast or have been skipping breakfast during the summer, this is the time to get them back into healthy eating habits. A good breakfast can set up the entire day.
