British man gets legal lesson on ex post facto law

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) —A British man who parked his car overnight came back to a parking ticket because during the night, the spot had been turned into a handicap parking spot, with the lines painted around his vehicle while it was parked.

He said he actually thought it was a joke, but no.

A neighbor had requested it years earlier and that was the night the authorities chose to paint it, which turned out to be two months after the handicapped neighbor had passed away.

In the United State we have rules against so-called ex post facto laws, which are laws created after you’ve already committed the act, that retroactively change the punishment for the action that you took that wasn’t illegal when you took it. 

Stateside it’s considered unconstitutional. The British might want to look into it, lest they face some unhappy constituents.
