Just like doctors, lawyers specialize, too

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Do you have a lawyer? How many?

After a series of tweets by Tesla's Elon Musk that were so ill-considered, they make one wonder if Roseanne Barr was wondering how that guy kept his job after the SEC filed a suit against Musk and Tesla for making false and misleading statements.

Musk and Tesla settled the suit for separate $20 million fines. But the interesting part of the settlement was a requirement by the SEC that there must be a lawyer hired to vet tweets who has qualifications that are not unacceptable to the staff — which seems like a pretty obvious swipe at the current head of the legal department, who handled two of Musk's divorces.

Here's the thing: If you were having a heart attack, it wouldn't occur to you to go to a dentist just because you call the guy doctor. Lawyers also specialize.

If you are facing a criminal charge, find a criminal lawyer. If you are aware that the SEC is concerned about your practices, hire someone with securities experiences.

Don't just go to a guy you know who has a law degree hanging on his walls without asking: What is it you do all day?
