PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Please pass the hormone free turkey. I think?  

A woman who called the Butterball hotline, the number provided by turkey producer Butterball, Inc. to answer your Thanksgiving-related turkey preparation questions, wanted to know why her turkey wouldn't stop sudsing when she rinsed it. 

Lest you be concerned that it was a rabid bird, it turned out that she was rinsing the turkey with dish soap. But what about what is actually in your turkey? 

The United States Department of Agriculture has guidelines on what the labels on the poultry you're buying mean, and they are important. Some terms you'll see on the label sound good but mean nothing.

For example, hormone free. Who wants a hormonal turkey? No one. 

It's illegal to use hormones when raising chickens so they're all hormone free. Don't pay more for it. 

Free range sounds good but it only means that turkeys had access to the outside, but there is no requirement of when and for how long. 

Other terms sound like nothing but are important. 

Basted or self-basted on a label means it's been injected or marinated with a solution containing butter or other fat, broth, stock or water and flavor enhancers. 

Just be sure that dish soap isn't a flavor enhancer you use.
