Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Common Sense Boating

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Boating is fun. Coming back is better. But KYW's Jay Lloyd, a Coast Guard veteran and lifetime sailor, warns of real life experiences that boater safety lists fail to mention.

Boaters wouldn't let their kids ride down a highway on the hood of the car. So, why let them ride on the bow of a power boat? Two recent area cases saw youngsters thrown overboard and hit by the props. One died, the other was injured.

Another boat owner was in a rush to get back from a day of cruising and swimming. He didn't bother blowing fumes out of the engine compartment. Coast Guard veteran Bill Gleason recalls responding when the boater just pushed the start button.

“The boat blew up and there was a girl sitting on top of the hatch when it went off,” Gleason said.

And then there was the boater who didn't want to disappoint friends, hoping to catch fish. He ignored the weather warnings. Four went out, two wearing life vests came back. Unfortunately, the two who didn't did not.

Have fun - come back.
