PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- In a land of immigrants, the history of immigration has suddenly spiked. KYW's Jay Lloyd suggests a summer getaway to an American portal of hope.

It's the most emotion bending sight on the American landscape. The Lady in the Harbor with an upheld arm bearing a torch of welcome to New York and the USA. Several years ago, I ferried past the Statue of Liberty with baseball icon Tommy LaSorda of Norristown. He was being honored at neighboring Ellis Island as a notable son of immigrants. Although an American by birth, Tommy's words echoed those of millions who first felt the touch of freedom as the Lady came in sight.

"It's just a statue. But what it represents is America," LaSorda said. "I get goosebumps."

You can visit both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island for a captivating view of the people and events that forged the melting pot.

Ferries to both islands leave from lower Manhattan near Battery Park.
