PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- As Tall Ships arrive at Penn's Landing next week, visitors may have a longing to try their own hand at sailing. There are schools for that.

As close as the Chesapeake, you'll find sailing schools that can get you ready to be a working crew member on a friend's boat, a weekend charter or move up to earn the title of "Skipper," sailing your own charter - even your own boat.

Veteran Chesapeake sailing school director Jason Pinter at the Sailing Academy in St. Michaels, Maryland talks about broader horizons.

“You’ll go down to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean," Pinter said, "(you'll) be able to charter a boat and sail a week at a time.”

What you'll learn through a progressive variety of courses is the relationship of sails and wind, sail handling, navigation, docking, safety and rules of the road.

You can even earn certification to smooth the way for chartering a boat from here to the Caribbean. In other words, learn to live that sail-away fantasy.
