PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- As the summer season dawns, travelers who are 65 years old and up are getting notices from Medicare reminding them of coverage during foreign getaways.

Check it before booking.

In short, Medicare is reminding policy holders that, except in rare occasions, the national over 65 health plan coverage out of the country is zip, zilch, nada. But that doesn't mean you have to go uncovered.

"Travelers can buy travel medical coverage for the duration of their trip," said  insurance broker Randy Riegner.

Riegner adds that there are limits on some plans.

"They can purchase up to $50,000," he explained, "and, in some cases, for those under 70, they can purchase up to $2 million of coverage."

Now for the bad news; pre-existing conditions.

"If the cause of the medical expense is a pre-existing condition, they are going to deny the coverage," Riegner said.

If you already have a Medi-gap plan, check it for foreign coverage. Or call your broker for info on a travel policy.
