Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Ski lessons for novices

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Half of the couple was panicked in the snow shouting, "I didn't do this on purpose." The other trying to calm things down — it was a personal ski lesson gone bad.

As the ski season barrels into winter, it's important to remember that trying to teach a loved one a sport of the season can strain family ties and romance.

Nothing can make a lover livid faster, so it's time to go to a pro.

It's more fun talking about the adventure of learning to ski over candlelight and wine at a cozy lodge than getting involved in the twists and falls of the learning process.

Virtually all ski resorts have professionally certified ski schools with instructors accustomed to the fears and awkwardness of beginners — including kids.

They also offer learning packages that combine lessons, lift tickets and rental equipment at deep discounts.

One tip: Dress for snow, not for fashion. Bring water resistant outerwear, gloves and a good ski hat. Learning is easier with warmth and comfort.

Chills lead to spills.
