PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- If you're itching to get on the water during a Big Apple spring getaway, consider getting your sea legs on a ferry.

The name Hornblower suggests high adventure at sea. Horatio Hornblower was the fictional version of the real life Royal Naval hero, Lord Nelson. Today, the name is attached to New York ferry services, including a waterborne trip to Rockaway Beach. The ride is the newest of ferry services from Wall Street and gets you to the beach in under an hour.

The price is an amazing $2.75, the same as a subway.

New Yorkers have been using the ferries for the work commute. But on one recent ride, the water route is now a  recreational thing.

"I would take it just for fun with my parents or friends," said one rider.

For visitors, ferries connect Manhattan with New Jersey and the boroughs.

On the next Big Apple getaway, get some wind in your hair and salt on the cheeks.
