PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The link between cigarette smoking and lung disease is well known, but many people are unaware about the dramatic impact on the heart and cardiovascular system.

Studies have shown that smoking in any form — including vaping — can increase the risk of heart attack, heart rhythm disturbances and stroke.

A recent study of 190,000 people supports these concerns. In that group there were over 11,000 hospitalizations per year.

Think about it, that is 31 hospitalizations per day.

Another way of looking at it is that smokers have tripled the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease when compared to people who have never smoked.

They also have double the risk of heart attack and stroke.
