PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There’s lots of talk about people who are putting themselves at higher risk because they have not been to the doctor.

Obviously, the risks are dependent on each person's underlying conditions, but there are two specific conditions where a lack of routine care and follow up are having an impact: diabetes and heart disease.

In the case of diabetes, it’s critical to keep the blood sugar in a certain range with monitoring and medication. Many people have more or less let things go without support and guidance.

The other issue is heart disease, in particular, high blood pressure.

Medications can be expensive and many are facing financial hardships. And because high blood pressure is a silent killer, it’s easy to stop taking medications. COVID-19 can be a killer, but ignoring critical health problems can be even worse.
