PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Abdominal pain is very common, and in the vast majority of cases, it is a result of a virus or eating something that irritates the stomach.

However, about 15 percent of people who go to the emergency room with abdominal pain have intestinal obstruction as the cause. Intestinal obstruction occurs when there is an interruption of forward flow of intestinal contents.

If not recognized and treated, intestinal obstruction can lead to bowel ischemia, where there is actually death of tissue due to a lack of blood supply. Most people with the problem have the abdominal pain as well as nausea, vomiting and the inability to pass gas.

The key message here is if you have abdominal pain that does not go away, take the time to see a physician.
