PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- We don't really think about it as parents, but our children's blood pressure is very important.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that physicians take a serious look at blood pressure in children and not only monitor it regularly, but discuss the importance of controlling blood pressure with parents at each visit.

The conversation is not just about blood pressure. There is a need to stress the importance of proper diet, as well as exercise in these formative years. There is a great deal of concern that problems such as type 2 diabetes are starting younger and younger ages because of the obesity epidemic in this country. It is estimated that as many as 33% of children are obese.

Those who study blood pressure in children and look at the statistics are examining the present blood pressure tables that we have and considering changing them to reflect these new findings.
