PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Studies have shown that in the course of a lifetime, one out of eight people will experience depression.

According to a new report published in The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, more than a quarter of high school students will experience depression. This particular study was an anonymous survey carried out with the consent of parents and school counselors.

In the study, 26.8 percent of the students met the criteria for depression.

There are two concerns raised: Are we are seeing an increased rate of depression in high school students that may not have existed just a few decades ago, and is there an increased risk of self-harm or even suicide that comes with depression?
