PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There is no doubt that the devastating impact of concussions in the NFL has had an impact on youth sports including football. Certainly, there is no way to minimize this and it's important that anyone who has a child considering participation in football be aware of the potential complications.

However, what many people don't realize is that most fatalities among high school and college football athletes do not occur while playing the game of football.

They occur during conditioning sessions which are often associated with overexertion, and since the 1960s, football has been associated with the highest number of fatalities of any high school or college sport.

It's interesting to note that the number of traumatic injuries has reduced in that time.

As we head into the hottest time of the year, it's important to realize that hydration, rest and common sense are all very important parts of the training process.
