PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When it comes to injuries and visits to the physician for musculoskeletal problems, there is often an expectation that medication or some sort of surgical procedure is the best option for care.

However, a growing amount of literature is supporting the fact that a visit to an athletic trainer or physical therapist after an injury and examination by the physician could be the most beneficial thing a patient can do.

So why doesn't it happen more often? One of the major reasons is because therapy takes time and it can be hard.

Many people don't want to take the time from school or work or other obligations to undergo therapy, or they may not be able to get away from work or afford the treatment.

Nevertheless, a report in the Journal of Athletic Training supports the need to get this additional care in becoming an active part in your own healing.
