PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Perhaps if physicians prescribed healthy foods early in life, they wouldn't have to prescribe as many costly medications later in life.

As a physician, I prescribed medications every day, plus my fair share of laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures.

According to a report from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we may have it all wrong. Perhaps we should be spending more time writing healthy food prescriptions.

According to the report, healthy food prescriptions written for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries have a dramatic effect on lowering the risk of chronic illness.

Those involved in this report had an excellent suggestion: People who come to the store with a prescription for healthier foods could receive as much as a 30 percent discount on the foods, including fruits and vegetables. Many families have stated that the biggest barrier to eating healthy is the cost of foods.
