PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- It is called "presenteeism." This is a fancy word that describes people coming into work despite being sick.

It may be a part of our culture of working to the max or it could be a result of many companies having eliminated what used to be known as sick days.

In recent years vacation time, as well as sick time, has been called "paid time off" or PTO by many companies. The concept is that someone should use up a PTO day if they are not feeling well.

However, since PTO days are lumped into the same bucket as vacation time, many people come to work when they're not feeling well. The result is an increased risk of the spread of infection.

This is something that is not desirable in any company and it may be time to bring sick time back. Some old ideas are actually good ones.
