PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Henry David Thoreau didn't need any major medical studies to know getting out in nature was a wonderful thing for our overall health and mental well-being.

He didn't have an opportunity to read a paper in the Journal Scientific Reports, but if he did he would've seen information from a study of over 20,000 people who had their activities recorded over a two-year period.

He would've learned what we are learning now. Spending just 60 to 90 minutes in nature per week was not enough time to reap the benefits of the outdoors and anything more than 5 hours per week didn't offer any additional benefit.

According to the study two hours was the ideal amount of time needed to reap the health benefits of the great outdoors.
