PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The Mona Lisa is such a famous painting that you probably can visualize it just thinking about it. That's a good thing, because if you are in your car just visualize it now.

According to those who have studied the painting, the famous Mona Lisa smile may be the result of the fact she has hypothyroidism.

The Mona Lisa is modeled after a woman named Lisa Gheradini, and like many Italian women at the time she had a diet low in iodine. Hypothyroidism may have impacted the muscles that help her smile ---making them weaker.

In addition, in the painting you can see swollen hands, yellowing skin, as well as a receding hairline with thinning hair. These are symptoms of hypothyroidism.

A close look at the neck also suggests possible presence of an enlargement such as a goiter.

Similar symptoms of hypothyroidism were commonly depicted in paintings and sculptures from the renaissance.
