PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The human microbiome is a collection of microbes that colonize the surfaces lining our skin and other organs.

The more we learn about the microbiome, the more fascinating it becomes, and a growing amount of research is being performed looking at it.

To give you an idea, at any one time we are hosts to 500 to 1,000 different species of bacteria, and no two people have exactly the same microbiome.

It is dependent on what we eat, who we have contact with, antibiotics or medications that we take.

Links have been found to how much we weigh, mental conditions and most recently, we have learned that a favorable microbiome can help elite athletes ad scholars.

There is a great deal to learn and we are only looking at the tip of the iceberg.
