PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Years ago, there was a show called "The Six Million Dollar Man," which was quite popular because it focused on a person who had suffered a serious accident and was essentially rebuilt with prosthetic limbs.

In the fictional series, the hero had super powers. In the real world, many who suffer serious injuries would be happy with restoration of normal function.

The good news is that the world of prosthetics is evolving quickly. Work is underway at the University of Utah's bionic engineering lab, where artificial intelligence is being used to develop limbs that actually respond to mental commands.

The research is early but extremely promising.
