PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- If you want to improve your health, numerous studies have shown it is better to be married, especially if you are a male.

But the health benefits of family life don’t end there.

Over the past decade, several studies have shown that parents are about half as likely to catch a cold as people without children, regardless of their preexisting immunity.

The most exciting work is from Carnegie Mellon University, which looked at numerous health benefits of parenting.

Of course, all of these studies have one major catch. The marriage needs to be a happy one. Stressful marriages can have a negative health impact.

The take away point: get married if you want to spend your life with someone — not just to get healthy. You can do that by eating well and exercising regularly.
