PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Memorial Day is a great opportunity for families to get together and to enjoy the beginning of the summer.

Of course, the major reason we have the holiday is to remember those who have sacrificed so much so that we'll have this opportunity to enjoy a day like this. The fact that we make time to celebrate family, friends and the summer season makes it truly special.

But there are health concerns on a day like this.

Without a doubt the most significant concern is the fact that many Americans take to the road as they celebrate. A certain percentage, despite all the warnings, will consume alcohol and get behind the wheel.

I can't stress enough the importance of not drinking and driving, but even if you are someone who is not drinking, please make certain that you are alert on the road and that you and your family are in seatbelts and car seats, if necessary.

Enjoy the day, but don't put yourself at greater risk.
