PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Philadelphia is the birthplace of many things, including the first Asian Arts Initiative in the country.

"At the time when we were formed, things are different now," said deputy director Julie Shaw. "But we really, for many years, were unique in the country as being kind of the only place that focused solely on the Asian American experience through art."

Shaw says the organization celebrates a milestone this year.

"We're still unique in that we are 25 years old," she explained. "We were kind of the first touch point for many emerging Asian American artists to call home."

And there is lots going on to mark the occasion.

"We'll have visual arts projects at different places throughout the city," Shaw said. "On May 3 we'll have a bus tour that will start at Asian Arts initiative at 1219 Vine Street and it will take people to those different sites."

And there's more.

"We'll have a reception on Friday night at our gallery opening where people can come and see the gallery show that we'll have," Shaw said. "We'll have some activity and performances related to that."
