PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The new schedule for The Philly Pops is out, and wow, it's something.

First, something totally new: "A Night at The Opera House: The Music of Queen" on Nov. 30 at The Met Philadelphia.

Grammy-winning pianist Todd Ellison is the new music director and comes to us from Broadway.

"The people of Philadelphia tell it like it is. You know right away if you are on their side or you are not on their side," he said. "The  musicians here are stupendous. They can play any style of any kind of music, whether it's Broadway or Hollywood or jazz. They can adapt to any of it, and they play it so well.

"And they love what they do," he continued, "and that you don't get everywhere, and so it's really fun to make music with them."

His mentor was Marvin Hamlisch, and among the programs the Pops will be doing in the 2019-2020 season is "Hamlisch: With Love" at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts; "Sinatra: A Man and His Music"; the always popular "A Philly Pops Christmas"; the 90th anniversary of Steven Sondheim; "Pops Goes to Hollywood: From Raiders to Gotham"; and much more.

Listen to the full interview with Ellison below for an in-depth look at what to expect with the Pops.
