PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States.

There is no single cause for suicide, but the majority of teens who attempt suicide have a significant mental health disorder.

The leading psychiatric issue is depression. When you consider that 8% of high school students make a suicide attempt each year — a startling number — it is particularly concerning that more than 50% of youth treated in the emergency department after a suicide attempt do not receive a mental health assessment.

There are certain signs to look out for: highest on the list is a teen who talks or writes about suicide or death; changes in emotions and activities and the use of drugs and alcohol.

The stakes are exceptionally high and it is important to stay on top of things.
