Tall Ships: Oliver Hazard Perry and Spirit Bermuda

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Newly built sailing ships that evoke images of a dramatic nautical past will take part in the Delaware River Parade of Sail on May 24, including two unique vessels that train young sailors for a life at sea.

Coming through a haze, the Oliver Hazard Perry appears as a War of 1812 ship during the battle of Lake Erie. Same lines and color scheme. But she's steel hulled and only been at sea for three years.

John Brady, skipper of the Seaport Museum, tells us new sail training vessels still spark imagination.

"There's an appeal to those ships that keeps moving right along," Brady said. "They continue to get built - sailed."

The island of Bermuda provides more proof in its own replica Tall Ship. Watch for the Spirit of Bermuda and its island crew sail close to the wind, as an early 19th century British Sloop of War did so well.
