PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Do you have high blood pressure?

You might be a bit confused if you have high blood pressure or not because the American Heart Association recently issued new guidelines that changed how we looked at a high blood pressure.

With the new guidelines, more than 75% of Americans over the age of 65 meet criteria for the condition.

Blood pressure is stated as two numbers: in the past time blood pressure was defined as 140/90 mmHg or higher. According to the new guidelines, you are considered to have blood pressure if the top number is 130 or above and the bottom number is 80 or above.

Remember, these are just guidelines, but it is important to take them seriously, because lowering your blood pressure can help reduce your risk for heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and even death.
