Weekend Box Office Report: 'Deadpool 2' sets bar heroically high on opening weekend

May 20, 2018 - 10:15 pm

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — "Deadpool 2" is anything but dead in the water.

The sequel to 2016's comic book-inspired "Deadpool" — with Ryan Reynolds not only returning in the title role but co-writing and co-producing — earned an estimated $125 million on its opening weekend to run away with first-place honors.

That left the leader of the last three weekends, "Avengers: Infinity War," as the distant runner-up, taking in another $29 million.

Third place went to "Book Club," the debuting comedy headlined by Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda, which earned $13 million.

And the weekend's other new offering — the talking-animals family comedy "Show Dogs" — took in $6 million, landing in sixth place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were well above those of last weekend as well as those of a year ago.
