CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) — Today marked the end of the line for official use of a century-old monastery  in Camden,  NJ.

The number of nuns at the Monastery of the Dominican Nuns of the Perpetual Rosary, on Haddon Avenue, had fallen to four, and the order made a change of address, according to Peter Feuerherd, spokesman for the Diocese of Camden.

“The function of the community will be moved to Elmira, NY, so in a certain sense the community will live on but in a different place,” Feuerherd notes.

And that function was evident in the use of the term “monastery” rather than “convent,” Feuerherd notes.

“Both communities of men and communities of women have formed themselves together for prayer and solitude.  They don’t go out.  They stay in that community and their life is of contemplation,” he tells KYW Newsradio.

The building’s future remains in the hand of the Dominican Nuns order.
