ED or erectile dysfunction is quite common.  According to recent studies, it is estimated that approximately 40% of men age 40-70 suffer from some degree of erectile dysfunction. Dr. Michael Bickell, a urologist at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne says the good news is, men don't have to suffer because it can be treated. He says there are medications and surgical procedures that will solve the problem.

He adds that common causes of ED include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and prostate cancer treatment. He says while age is not an independent factor, however, as men age, there is an increase of comorbid conditions that cause erectile dysfunction and as such erectile dysfunction is more common in older men.

According to Dr. Bickell, younger patients experiencing ED should be seen by a cardiologist for a complete cardiac workup. He says in that population, ED can be a warning sign of heart issues to come. He explains that plaque which blocks coronary arteries will clog smaller arteries 3-5 years before becoming a problem in larger arteries. That means a man can experience erectile dysfunction several years before suffering from blocked arteries in the heart.
