PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Most of us are acutely aware that there is an opioid epidemic in this country. Sadly, the issue has impacted virtually every family in one form or another and it only seems to be getting worse.

However, there are efforts underway to reduce the stigma and to properly train physicians so that they will able to provide care for this group.

One of the biggest issues that is making the problem worse is the fact that there is a stigma associated with the use of opioids. In addition, many of the patients who need treatment don't believe they require it.

Another barrier is trying to change the public perception that opioid users are "junkies" and "immoral". There is no doubt this is an illness that needs aggressive treatment and those that are addicted need help.
