PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- International club soccer will return to Philadelphia again this summer with two European giants facing off at Lincoln Financial Field.

Germany's Bayern Munich will play Italy's Juventus on July 25.

Former Bayern star and overall soccer legend Lothar Matthäus said even though the U.S. National team didn't qualify for this year's World Cup, the sport in this country is doing just fine.

"The quality of the game and the influence from the stadiums," he explained, as well as "more spectators in the stadiums, better atmosphere in the stadiums," influenced the success of the sport.

Matthäus, who made his first-ever Philly visit recently to promote the impending game, has one of the best resumes in soccer, winning titles with Bayern Munich and Inter Milan as well as a World Cup with Germany in 1990. He also played in the Major Soccer League in 2000 for the Metro Stars.

With the Eagles Super Bowl victory and strong plays by other hometown teams, Matthäus acknowledged Philadelphia as a hub for all things sports across the nation.

"Philadelphia is the No. 1 sports city in the U.S. at this moment," he said. "Not only the Super Bowl winner, some in the other sports they make good results. I think Philadelphia can be proud of the sports in the city."
