PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Another long-time musician is having hearing issues. The latest is Huey Lewis, who's cancelled all concerts for the rest of the year as a result.

Vertigo, ringing in the ear, and hearing loss are all symptoms of Meniere's disease, according to Dr. Douglas Nadel, an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist at Doylestown Hospital.

The symptoms usually last a couple of hours, up to a day, and, in between, there is usually not a hearing loss," Nadal said, "although, over time, repeated episodes can lead to hearing loss."

The cause is unknown, but it strikes in middle age and there are certain triggers.

"Preventing episodes falls into a number of treatment areas," Nadel explained. "First is to avoid things that can trigger these attacks. Known triggers for Meniere's disease are caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and stress. The next step is going on a low-salt diet. We think if you get salt out of your diet that leads to less fluid pressure in your inner ear and that can help preventively."

There is no cure, but medication and surgery can treat the symptoms.
