PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- A West Philadelphia hospital celebrated a milestone Saturday that had one overjoyed community dancing in the streets.

"My life was saved in the hospital," said 72-year-old Matt Hopkins.

Hopkins danced in the streets in front of Mercy Hospital at 53rd Street and Cedar Avenue. He was showing thanks, as the facility put on a block party to celebrate 100 years in the community.

"Mercy is here, we will continue to be here, we are a part of the community," said Steven King, with Mercy Hospital. "We have a great relationship with the block captains, with the 18th Police District. Our facility is used by the community free of charge."

And so was all of the food, rides, games, music and rock climbing, giving 11-year-old Linden Thomas a chance to mingle with others in his community.

"I have somebody I don't know here," Thomas said, "and I might get to know them."

Look for another celebration next summer when a new edition to the hospital opens.
