PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Scores of special athletes will have the tools needed to reach for the gold. A Montgomery Gym is donating its space to help them train.

There's finally a home base for athletes competing in Special Olympics in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The young men and women will now train at Horsham Athletic Club, and general manager Kurt Vonder Schmalz couldn't be happier about the year-long agreement.

"The club itself is turning over the facility for their training of the athletes," he said. "They in the past have not had an elite facility that they could call home to train. We're providing the facility, they're providing the athletes as well as the trainers. They're also allowing our trainers to be involved."

Vonder Schmalz says it's a good fit, because his gym already provides for all members of the community.

"We have a program here called HAC stars, every Friday night for eight week cycles we provide an outlet for the special needs community, young adults to call this place home," he said. "It's a social and fitness event.

Schmalz says training will take place on weekends when the gym is less crowded, so the athletes will have access to all the equipment they need to get and stay ready for competition.
